The movie Jesus Revolution tells the true story of the Jesus People Movement of the late 1960s and 70s, when thousands of young people—many of them former hippies—turned to Christ, sparking a nationwide revival that transformed churches across America.
When Revival Met a Generation
The Jesus People Movement
During the Jesus Movement revival of the 1960s and 70s — a sovereign move of God that swept across America, drawing thousands of young people into radical salvation — something powerful also broke loose in Prescott, Arizona.
In 1970, Wayman and Nelda Mitchell moved to Prescott to take over a small, struggling congregation. Not long after, God began saving young hippies — wild, broken, and nothing like the traditional church crowd. But as the church welcomed them, God poured out His Spirit. Hungry to reach this new generation, Pastor Mitchell launched a “coffee-house” concert outreach. At the very first concert, over 200 young people showed up — and many got saved. This became a regular ministry: two nights a week, bands played, testimonies were shared, and the Gospel was preached. Every week, souls were saved.
Then in 1978, the first missionary couple was launched to Australia — and the Gospel worked there just like it did in Prescott. Churches followed in Mexico, Holland, Germany, and beyond. As the vision for world evangelism grew, so did the movement.
Today, that single church in Prescott has multiplied into over 4,000 churches across the United States and the world.
